Dallas SWE Happenings
I’m pleased to report that we continue to have new faces and repeats coming to our monthly meetings, with several recent grads coming in April.
Our own Dr. Dona Mularkey entertained us in April with a sampling of her many career adventures and left us with a few lessons:
Dr. Mularkey’s Life Lessons:
Keep sense of humor
Don’t over plan
Remain flexible – open your mind and life to new experiences
Embrace change
Look at both sides of an issue
Keep learning
Ask questions
“when horse is dead – know when to get off”
Know when to speak up
Learn when to keep your mouth shut
Be low maintenance
Pre-college Certificate program –
Margaret Bareis chair; There is still time for submitting nominations for High School and Jr. High School Certificate of Merit Awards. Visit http://www.dallaswe.org for details.
School Mentors needed before June – Communities in School’s Dallas
This non-profit has the motto of “Share an Hour/Shape a Life” and the goal of connecting community resources to support at risk students in local schools in hopes that the students will stay in school, learn how to learn, and be better prepared for life.
Visit the Communities in Schools’ Dallas at www.cisdallas.org and/or call Leigh Ann 214-827-0955 ext 229
Dallas Habitat’s Women Build Program
The Women Build program encourages wider participation of women in the Habitat mission of building affordable homes in partnership with and for sale to deserving low-income families
Details can be found at http://www.dallas-habitat.org, by email to cynlutz@dallas-habitat.org, or calling Cyndy Lutz at 214-827-4037 X 45. If you’ve ever thought about volunteering for Habitat while also learning skills re house construction, this may be the extra-curricular volunteer activity for you.
Math*Blazer Program and Volunteers Needed – May 15
I was recruited as a volunteer last year for the Dallas Boys and Girls Clubs math competition for middle school students that is known as Math*Blazers and it was an exciting, rewarding event. So, if your available on May 15 (ends at 1:30) you might want to volunteer. I believe you can find details at their web site: http;//www.bgcdallas.org or by emailing bcullum@bgcdallas.org
An out-standing technology based hands-on activity is coming for summer 2004 - Zap! Cutting Edge Surgery will be at the Shops at Willow Bend this summer.
If you or those you know (including mature teens) are available for a few volunteer hours this summer, this is a great opportunity to share your engineering passion with younger people. OR if you or your employer have need for something different in the way of summer excitement let them know. Visit http://www.mindstretchingfun.org for the details.
Please let educators and high school seniors know that SWE Dallas sponsors an annual scholarship for new women high school graduates who are major in engineering at college. Our deadline is May 15th with information provided on our website http://www.dallaswe.org
JOB Updates
Last month, we introduced you to Nicky Butler a recent EE graduate from Missouri. Nicky attended our April meeting and reported that she is now a new Boeing employee with an assignment in the quality department.
Job search
While Nicky reported on her employment success, new mechanical engineer Amber Davis could use assistance in finding employment in the Dallas area. Suggestions can be sent to l.Bryant@ieee.org.

I’ve got several ideas of how we might work with other engineering organizations in our area on some new, joint projects. I’m having problems getting contacts within these organizations. So, I need members to volunteer to serve as SWE-liaisons with other organizations. Please reply to l.bryant@ieee.org with your name and affiliation with any other Dallas area organization with an engineering, technology, and computer science slant.
