STAFF REPORT

North Dallas resident April McGarry was the recipient of the annual scholarship awarded by the Dallas Section of the Society of Women Engineers.

The annual $1,000 scholarship is awarded to a local high school graduate entering any university to study engineering, math or the sciences. McGarry attended Ursuline Academy in Dallas. She graduated with a 4.1 grade-point average.

Dallas Section president Davinia Chism reports that the society had a record number of applicants for 2005.

Jean Cathcart, a SWE member, headed the selection committee and indicated the choice was difficult but that McGarry's qualifications shone above the others.

Cathcart stated that McGarry is "a very bright young lady who appears to have a good handle on life, and some big plans for the future."

McGarry is attending the University of Texas in Austin, majoring in mechanical engineering.
