Dallas SWE’s January Book Club Recap

In our latest book club meeting, we discuss The Power of Habit: Why We Do What We Do in Life and Business by Charles Duhigg. This book expanded on the idea of habits and the basic trifecta surrounding businesses, individuals and society. It further explains that habits are malleable and that we are truly able to change for the better. We also discussed some of our own habits that we are excited to change and also some of the interesting case studies from the book. As we continue to explore our own worlds, we were amazed by the impacts of the various cases, whether it be Civil Rights Movement, Target or enabling an individual to quite smoking. Everyone really enjoyed the brunch whilst also chatting and getting to know each other over the book.

If you would like to participate in the next book club meeting, please email dallas.swe@gmail.com or join us on Goodreads and be sure to sign up on the Eventbrite! We look forward to seeing you there soon!

Dallas SWE’s 2020 Kick Off Brunch Recap

To give a kick start to 2020, our devoted Dallas SWE members braved the snow and ice to gather at True Food kitchen on January 11th.  Sixteen amazing women donned heavy jackets and scarves as they made their way carefully to Preston Plaza to meet up and participate in this month’s social gathering. We had an amazing host that had our table ready when we got there. It was exciting to see some new faces.

The day didn’t go without a surprise, as our own Haley Barnes was recognized by SWE and given the WE Local Collegiate Guiding Star Award. She will be accepting her award in London.  The entire SWE family is happy for her achievement and thanks to Haley for bringing the award home. We would like to thank Haley’s husband, Scott, for joining our event. Also, special thanks to Haritha Yearuva for coordinating this membership event!

February Member of the Month: Haritha Yearuva

Congratulations to Haritha Yearuva, Dallas SWE’s February 2020 member of the month!

Haritha Yearuva hails from Hyderabad, India. She relocated to Boston, Massachusetts, in 2010 to pursue a masters degree in electrical engineering at the University of Massachusetts Lowell.  Moving to Boston was a significant change for her, both culturally and socially, as it was her first venture outside of India, away from her family and friends.   After graduating, she chose a career in the architecture and engineering industry, with a focus on the mission critical data center design.  Her company relocated her to Dallas in 2013 to support the rapid growth of the data center industry in the region, which serves as a major network hub along the nationwide fiber network.  Eight years later, she has expanded her experience, now focused on renewable energy, working as a Senior Electrical Engineer at Telios Corporation located in Dallas.

Haritha’s present focus is on the design of large scale solar photovoltaic installations providing clean energy to the utility grid.  She is constantly challenged by work in this evolving industry.  In 2019, she achieved her personal and professional goal of becoming a licensed Professional Engineer (PE), which gives her authority to be in responsible charge of major projects submitted to state and local municipalities for construction approval.

As she has learned and advanced in her career over the past eight years, she has become a mentor herself at the firms she has worked for, guiding younger designers from both a technical and a project management perspective.  Haritha has dreams of one day running a small engineering firm in the future where she can employ female engineers and provide an excellent service to the community. In the last eight years, she mentored good numbers of people at work and outside the workplace.

Haritha joined the Society of Women Engineers in the year of 2014. She has a passion for supporting women in the STEM industry.   In 2019, Haritha made it a point to become more actively involved in the local Dallas SWE chapter, and has found it immediately rewarding.  She has been involved in the organizing of the 2019 holiday party, and the 2020 social brunch, both successful networking events that brought SWE members together to develop personal and professional relationships.  At present, she is leading efforts in creating and implementing a mentoring program within the Dallas chapter.  She also works with both the membership and programs committees at SWE Dallas.

Outside the work, Haritha likes to travel, read, watch sports (mostly football) with her fiancé and loves going to the movies.

“I always knew I wanted to contribute to the empowerment of women in general and in the workplace, and in the process, I found SWE Dallas as the best medium to do that.  This past year the time and service I contributed to SWE gave me a sense of satisfaction and gratitude.  In every event, I get to meet new people and hear about their unique experiences and challenges. Hearing their experiences motivates me to do more with my life. Meeting other immigrants gives me a feeling that I’m not alone in my pursuit of professional and personal goals far away from where I was raised.”
