March 15 Professional Development Meeting

Join Dallas SWE for our March Professional Development Event

As tech women, salary negotiation is an essential skill, but negotiating isn’t always so easy. Imposter syndrome, fear, and unconscious bias are real adversaries that can get in your way to a successful negotiation and earning what you deserve. The good news is that negotiation is a skill that can be learned. Come learn how Founder of DevelopHer, Lauren Hasson, tripled her base salary in less than two years by grounding herself in data and asking critical questions to uncover key leverage points and ultimately learned to negotiate with confidence.

About the Speaker: Lauren Hasson is the Founder of DevelopHer, a career development platform for tech women by tech women, and a practicing software engineer at a prominent Bay Area fintech company where she’s building their iOS SDK and working in information security. Her work has been featured in Apple keynotes, she was one of 100 top innovators invited to attend the UK G8 Innovation and Decide Now Act Summits with the United Nation’s technology council, and she’s won multiple, high-profile hackathons. She holds a degree from Duke where she completed a triple major with honors in electrical engineering, computer science, and economics in just four years. As the Founder of DevelopHer, she’s a champion for tech women and a mentor to fellow female engineers which is why she founded DevelopHer – to help tech women develop and advance their careers. Her podcast, The DevelopHer Show, is now available at www.DevelopHer.com and features leading tech women speaking candidly about their careers and lessons learned.

This meeting is open to all (men and women, SWE members and non-members alike), and children are also welcome (use your discretion, child care is not provided). Food will be available for purchase by the individual.

Eventbrite - Dallas SWE March 2018 Professional Development Meeting

Event Recap: College to Careers Conference

On Saturday February 24, Dallas SWE, NSBE DFW, and SHPE DFW invited 60 students from Dallas / Fort Worth area colleges and universities to enjoy a free day of professional development speakers, a panel of representatives from all three organizations, and get their resume reviewed by working professionals. While the rainy weather impacted our student attendance rate, the folks who did show up enjoyed learning about how to overcome obstacles, personal branding, entrepreneurship, emotional intelligence, and how to make the most of their early career years! We find our partnerships with NSBE and SHPE to be very valuable and the students appreciate seeing us work together to affect common goals.

Thanks to our amazing volunteers and speakers: stay tuned for information on next year’s event!

Call for FY18 Nominating Committee Members

As we enter the latter portion of our fiscal year, it’s time to assemble our Nominating Committee to help prepare the FY19 Officer Ballot. This is an important but time-limited service to our section and to SWE that has only a few requirements per our bylaws:

  1. You must be a a voting member of the Society and not be a candidate in the FY19 Officer election.
  2. Starting toward the end of March, the Committee shall evaluate nominations and present at least one candidate for each office to be included on the ballot. For FY19 we will be electing a President, Executive Vice President, VP of Membership, VP of Outreach, Secretary, and two members of our Investment Committee to serve terms starting July 1, 2018. Our current Treasurer’s 2-year term continues through June 30, 2019, and the Section Representative position is no longer necessary due to the dissolution of Regions vote that occurred at the WE17 Senate meeting.
  3. The above work must conclude and the candidate slate be presented to the section by April 15.
  4. The Nomination Committee shall present the ballot to the section and serve as tellers of the election, presenting the results at the end of voting.

We are looking for members to serve on the SWE Dallas nominating committee for FY 19 positions.  Each member must not be running for any of the open positions to serve on the committee. If you are interested in serving in this capacity, please contact contact Uche Maple@ uchea@hotmail.com by March 9, 2018. Thanks for giving back to Dallas SWE!

If you are interested in running for any of the elected positions listed above, stay tuned for FY19 Officers call for interest and check out our Officer Role Description document.

Event Recap: She Networks, She Wins!

SMU SWE’s annual networking event, “She Networks, She Wins” was held on February 20th with several of our Dallas SWE members in attendance. This event was a mixer between SMU’s collegiate chapter and our professional chapter and a great way for us to mix and mingle. After some networking time, the event featured a diverse panel of four distinguished female engineers from various industries and companies across the Dallas/Ft. Worth area. The panelists spoke about their background and experience and shared insightful career advice. Discussed topics included career progression, graduate school, career changes, and how to distinguish yourself as a high performer.

Event Recap: WE Local Tulsa

Five Dallas SWE members made their way to Tulsa, OK January 26-28 to experience the first WE Local conference of FY18! Registration was a breeze through the SWE membership portal, and the refreshed WE Event App was the best way to plan our experience in Tulsa. About a 4 hour drive away from the Dallas area, the trip was just as accessible as WE17 was in Austin, but offered a more intimate and more affordable experience.

The formal program began with breakfast on Friday and opening keynote speaker Kate Van Dellen, a Dallas SWE member and one of our Region C Senators! She gave a wonderful presentation that inspired us to call out discrimination when we experience it and to mentor the next generation of engineers to solve problems and speak out to support equality in our workplaces.

FY18 SWE President Jonna Gerkin delivered the State of SWE address at lunch and, along with other Society leaders in attendance, presided over the SWE Town Hall session. SWE members asked many questions concerning governance structure updates, SWE website updates in progress and the new Advance Learning Center 2.0, changes to future conference programming and career fair logistics, and the need for SWE Committee accountability as they become our only pathway to Society leadership opportunities. It was a great opportunity to voice our concerns and get real-time responses: a sincere thank-you to all the Society leadership representatives who attended!

Dallas SWE Members at WE Local Tulsa 2018!

Dallas SWE members Kate Van Dellen and Shelley Stracener presented professional development sessions during the conference on the topics of Finding Your Catch Phrase and Engineering Your Financial Future, respectively. WE Local conferences are an excellent way to practice your public speaking skills while sharing your passion for teaching and mentoring others: we encourage you to use them as a stepping stone to presenting at annual Society conferences! Rebecca Tom attended to recruit for her company, Texas Instruments, at the career fair, and Nancy Jennings attended the career fair as a job seeker and new transplant to Dallas. Tripat Baweja drove eight of her Colin College students to the conference for the weekend: what a trooper!

WE Local differed from our past Region conferences in that it included a Design Lab K-12 Outreach program and Parent & Educator program for local families. This is a great benefit of having SWE headquarters help in planning and executing WE Local conferences going forward and a wonderful opportunity to introduce SWE to each WE Local host city! We definitely took some notes on things we can use to improve our Design Your World Outreach series.

The closing event of the conference Saturday evening was an Award banquet with guest speaker Dima Ghawi,. Her transformative life story escaping an abusive culture and marriage to emancipating herself and her family members was so inspiring to those of us who struggle with shattering expectations and becoming courageous leaders.

As with all SWE conferences, attendees came home energized and motivated to make changes in our lives, our workplaces, and our communities! If you want to experience a WE Local conference this year, there are four more in the United States and two WE Locals overseas in 2018! Visit weloacl.swe.org for more details. The WE Local schedule for 2019 has also been announced, so mark your calendars and join your SWEsters where and when you are able!
