Design Your World: Event Recap
On Saturday, April 14th, Dallas SWE hosted the 13th Design Your World STEM Conference for Girls at Seagoville High School P-Tech Academy! The event was a great success and we were able to impact many high school girls on their journey toward a successful career in STEM. This event would not have been possible without our wonderful sponsors, volunteers, and host, Seagoville High School. Thanks to our amazing sponsors, ExxonMobil, State Farm, Schneider Electric, Lockheed Martin, HomeAdvisor, CapitalOne, and Defy for supporting the programming for this year’s conference. We also had over 60 volunteers come together to conduct the event, run the student activities, and speak on the panels for the Parent Educator Forum. Finally, thanks to our host, Seagoville High School P-Tech Academy for lending us a great stage to showcase an exciting day of STEM outreach.
Check out the full event recap posted on the DYW website for the full rundown and photos!
WE18 Registration is OPEN!
Please join us at WE18 October 18-20, 2018 in Minneapolis, MN! Check out our WE17 recap post with highlights of what going to a SWE conference is like. If you’ve never been to a SWE conference, you haven’t fully experienced all SWE has to offer!
Registration for WE18 opened this week and there are some important changes to the process. In an effort to limit large quantity room-blocking, which takes rooms off the “market” for months leading up to the conference and cancellations that SWE has to cover late in the game, this year’s housing reservation requires registration at the time of booking. Pay special attention to cancellation policies and deadlines!
On the topic of cost, there are travel grants available and volunteering for 4 hours will get you 25% off your registration cost (down from 50% in past years). There are also discounts for unemployed or career-fair only registrations. Check out those options on the WE18 website. Additionally, we offer our members the opportunity to participate in room-sharing to reduce housing cost! Please fill out our WE18 travel coordination survey if you’re interested in being connected to roommates. If you know for sure you’re going, we would encourage you to go ahead and book a hotel room and let us know when your cancellation deadline is so we can try to make those connections early on.
Please email us at dallas.swe@gmail.com if you have questions about the conference or travel coordination! We hope to see you at WE18!
FY19 Dallas SWE Leadership Ballot
Your voice matters! Please cast your vote below for our updated Dallas SWE Bylaws and our FY19 Leadership Team. You must be a voting member of the Dallas SWE Professional Section and in good standing with the Society to vote: the Nominating Committee will verify each voter’s member status.
Voting starts May 1 and closes on May 30.
Section Bylaws Amendments
The below updates are in response to a new professional section bylaws template published by SWE to implement Governance changes approved by the SWE Senate at WE17. The proposed Dallas SWE bylaws were approved by a majority of our FY18 Officers and are presented now to our section members for review. After approval of 2/3 of the ballots received, these bylaws will be sent to SWE;s Bylaws Committee for their approval. Please send any questions to dallas.swe@gmail.com.
You can view our current bylaws here.
You can find the proposed bylaws amendments here.
Changes in the proposed bylaws are tracked from the Society’s Modifiable Bylaws Template, not our previous bylaws version, per the Bylaws Committee instructions. Changes are as follows:
- Removal of the Section Representative officer position and references to Region Council meetings per the SWE Senate approved Governance restructuring plan.
- Change of verbiage around voting / non-voting members of the Society to reference professional / collegiate membership types due to collegiates recently being granted voting member rights. The offices of President and Exec VP must be professional members.
- The line in our current bylaws in the Exec VP section concerning their responsibility to plan professional development events has been removed. This is a procedural instruction that is not in SWE’s template and is determined at-will by the section’s leadership: it should not reside in our bylaws.
- Modifications from SWE’s template that are specific to our section: filled in section name and number where appropriate, renamed VP to Exec VP, added VP of Membership and VP of Outreach and their respective responsibilities as they are in our current Bylaws.
FY19 Leadership Election
