FY19 Dallas SWE Leadership Ballot

voteYour voice matters! Please cast your vote below for our updated Dallas SWE Bylaws and our FY19 Leadership Team. You must be a voting member of the Dallas SWE Professional Section and in good standing with the Society to vote: the Nominating Committee will verify each voter’s member status.

Voting starts May 1 and closes on May 30.

Section Bylaws Amendments

The below updates are in response to a new professional section bylaws template published by SWE to implement Governance changes approved by the SWE Senate at WE17. The proposed Dallas SWE bylaws were approved by a majority of our FY18 Officers and are presented now to our section members for review. After approval of 2/3 of the ballots received, these bylaws will be sent to SWE;s Bylaws Committee for their approval. Please send any questions to dallas.swe@gmail.com.

You can view our current bylaws here.
You can find the proposed bylaws amendments here.

Changes in the proposed bylaws are tracked from the Society’s Modifiable Bylaws Template, not our previous bylaws version, per the Bylaws Committee instructions. Changes are as follows:

  1. Removal of the Section Representative officer position and references to Region Council meetings per the SWE Senate approved Governance restructuring plan.
  2. Change of verbiage around voting / non-voting members of the Society to reference professional / collegiate membership types due to collegiates recently being granted voting member rights. The offices of President and Exec VP must be professional members.
  3. The line in our current bylaws in the Exec VP section concerning their responsibility to plan professional development events has been removed. This is a procedural instruction that is not in SWE’s template and is determined at-will by the section’s leadership: it should not reside in our bylaws.
  4. Modifications from SWE’s template that are specific to our section: filled in section name and number where appropriate, renamed VP to Exec VP, added VP of Membership and VP of Outreach and their respective responsibilities as they are in our current Bylaws.

Event Recap: “Own It” Book Club

On Sunday evening, a few of us gathered at Cafe Brazil in Plano to discuss our latest group read: “Own It: The Power of Women at Work” by Sallie Krawcheck. Written by a Wall Street executive turned entrepreneur, this book discussed career development tools and advice, including the value of mentors, sponsors, a good network, etc., as well as the importance of financial literacy and closing the gender investing gap as women. The book generated great discussion topics, in which the group shared their own career experience and advice.

If you would like to participate in the next read, please email Rana.m.karimi@gmail.com to get in on the fun! This is another great way to strengthen your SWE network!
