Member of the Month: Stephanie Watts Butler

We’re starting a new member appreciation initiative this year: Dallas SWE Member of the Month! With this program we hope to recognize some of our non-officer members whose technical contributions, leadership accomplishments, or SWE volunteer service are particularly noteworthy. This month, we would like to recognized Stephanie Watts Butler, Ph.D, P.E.! At WE16 in Philadelphia this month, she will accept the SWE Achievement Award, the highest honor given by the Society of Women Engineers. Congratulations, Stephanie!

Stephanie Watts Butler, Ph.D., P.E., has produced innovations in the semiconductor industry in the areas of control, process and package development, R&D management, and new product development. She currently is the Technology Innovation Architect in Texas Instruments’ High Voltage Power Solutions business unit, driving new technology innovations from concept to revenue by leading partnerships with TI’s technology organizations, manufacturing sites, universities, and product development teams. The result is amazing power semiconductors that enable TI’s customers to make smaller, lighter, and more energy efficient products. Dr. Butler has authored more than 40 papers and 16 U.S. patents. She is a Fellow of AVS and a Senior Member of IEEE and AIChE. SWE has honored Dr. Butler with the 2016 Achievement Award, and the Dallas Business Journal selected her as a 2015 Woman in Technology. She serves on the TxGCP Champion Board and UT Austin Department of Chemical Engineering Advisory Council.

My involvement with SWE began as a freshman in college. SWE was a supportive environment to develop my leadership and community service skills as part of a technical community. As a working professional, SWE continues to be a supportive environment for each new generation of engineers entering the workforce, while also providing opportunities to keep leadership and service skills fine-tuned throughout my career. The Dallas SWE section is an active community with different opportunities to easily network with people from a broad range of industries and even academia. I’m learning from individuals and situations that I would be unable to experience if I only focused on organizations within my industry. I’m also proud of the work the section does to introduce girls (and boys) to the exciting world of STEM and produce the next generation of innovators.

Event Recap: Dallas Professional & Technology Diversity Career Fair

On October 5th, Lynn Mortensen and Kate Van Dellen represented Dallas SWE at the Dallas Professional Diversity & Technology Career Fair hosted by the Professional Diversity Network. The event, held at the Embassy Suites Market Center, provided an excellent opportunity to showcase the advantages of being a SWE member to a diverse group of professionals. Dallas SWE members shared the many opportunities for professional development, networking and community outreach available locally and through the broader SWE organization. Several SWE members from other regions or collegiate sections stopped by to share their positive experiences being a SWE member and to inquire about how to connect with the local Dallas SWE section. A few visitors said they found out about the career fair from our website! The event gave all attendees a chance to network and socialize and to make quality connections with corporations and professional organizations who value diversity.

Event Recap: Self eSTEM Outreach Event

Last weekend, Dalals SWE members Alicia Morgan and Kim Concillado teamed up with Illuminate STEM and Women of AT&T for Self eSTEM, an all morning event building confidence in local 6th-12th graders to pursue their passion in science, technology, engineering and math. The program director, Awonu Lekia, led the young ladies in ice breakers and introspective questions before breaking them up into small groups. Each table rotation focused on a unique facet of STEM: from coding their names in binary using beads, designing the furthest-flying paper airplane, using teamwork and leadership to build a structure, and even powering an LED with lemons! The day concluded with a panel of real engineers answering questions and describing their daily life. Alicia and Kim had a lot of fun giving out “Future Engineer” buttons and answered questions from students ranging from, “What superpower do you wish you had?” to, “What is your favorite part of being an engineer?”
